การกลับมาอีกครั้งของ คนอึดตายยาก หลังหายไปนานร่วม 20 ปี กลับมาคราวนี้ จอห์น แมคเคลน ต้องหาทางยับยั้งผู้ก่อการร้ายที่คิดจะปิดระบบคอมพิวเตอร์ของชาติในวันชาติ เพื่อใช้เป็นช่องทางในการก่ออาชญากรรมข้ามชาติ โดยในภาคนี้ ลูกชายของแมคเคลน คือตัวช่วยสำคัญในการยับยั้งแผนร้ายครั้งนี้ จอห์น แม็คเคลน ผู้ชายธรรมดา ๆ ที่ตกไปอยู่ในสถานการณ์คับขันแล้วต้องใช้ทักษะแบบลูกผู้ชายดิ้นรนเอาตัวรอดจนได้ แม็คเคลนจึงเป็นม้านอกสายตาอยู่ตลอดเวลาโดยเขามักจะเข้าไปอยู่ผิดที่ผิดเวลาเสมอ ๆ และอาศัยความฉลาดเฉลียว, เอาตัวรอดเก่งกาจ, มีปัญญาหลักแหลม, และคล่องแคล่ว แถมยังไม่เคยไว้วางใจเจ้าหน้าที่ของรัฐ และเกลียดความชักช้าอืดอาดของทางการเข้าไส้ ผนวกกับความมุ่งมั่นที่อยากจะเห็นภาระกิจสำเร็จลุล่วงไปได้ด้วยดี แม้ต้องยอมเอาชีวิตเข้าแลก
